Our comprehension of the physical world around us is grounded in our experiences, observations and informed reason. Using relevant examples from the natural sciences, this course explores how different disciplines of inquiry- namely biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics- play a role in the exploration and discovery of the fundamental nature of the universe that surrounds us. This course explores how this mode of intellectual inquiry is linked to a common method that includes intuition, experimental testing, and the deduction of physical laws and principles that give order to our understanding. The first semester focuses on questions and ideas surrounding the structure of the cosmos, matter, and energy. These concepts are then applied to systems that are more complex in their organization with examples assembled from the biological sciences.

This course, inspired by the quaerere Deum of the Benedictines, explores the triune God of love revealed in Jesus Christ as the heart of all reality and the possibility of knowing, loving, and serving Him through the grace of a divine encounter. It examines the narrative of salvation history in Sacred Scripture (Creation and Fall, Israel and Redemption in Christ, the foundation of the Church) and engages two spiritual classics, St. Augustine’s Confessions as well as a contemporary work such as C. S. Lewis’ Surprised by Joy or St. Thérèse of Lisieux’s Story of a Soul.
