PTH 876 - Geriatric Elective 2


This course is taught over two semesters and in this second course, will continue to prepare students for practice in geriatrics. Students will have in-class, community, and independent study/project experiences. Students will build on their fundamental knowledge and will study more in-depth physical therapy management (examination, evaluation, and intervention) of the older adult including but not limited to the special populations of osteoporosis, Parkinson’s disease, cardiopulmonary involvement, dementia, and oncology. Content will be geared toward the needs and goals of older adults via direct community contact, best PT practice for select conditions, evidence-based community health promotion exercise and self-management programs, practical communication strategies for working with people with cognitive impairment, and opportunities, rewards, and challenges in the variety of settings in which geriatric PT is delivered. Aspects of prevention, evaluation, adjunctive interventions, overall management, and lifelong fitness for the older adult will be covered.
