Philosophy Major

Mission

The Philosophy Major invites students to engage deeply with fundamental questions concerning existence, knowledge, and morality. Throughout the major, students are trained in the historical philosophical tradition, as well as in critical thinking skills needed to address these questions.  

Program Learning Outcomes

  • Students demonstrate a foundational understanding of the historical philosophical tradition. 
  • Students formulate clear, logical, and well-supported arguments.
  • Students critically evaluate philosophical texts through careful and charitable reading.
  • Students produce a substantial philosophical paper and present a reasoned defense of their ideas in an academic setting.
