Advising

One important aspect of student life is the opportunity for students and faculty to associate outside the formality of the classroom. Through the advising program, at least one person on the University of Mary staff is individually concerned with a student’s academic progress and personal growth. The advising program assists the student in realizing his or her educational goals and in developing his or her leadership qualities. Initial advisors are assigned depending upon a student’s program of study and prior academic preparation. This could be an advisor from the Student Success Center, the TRIO/SSS program, the Student Success unit for Online Students, and/or a faculty advisor in the student’s discipline. As the student progresses in their program of study, additional faculty or support advisors are assigned.

Advisors assist students to resolve concerns in both academic and personal areas. They formulate degree plans, help in course selection, provide information about University requirements and policies, and refer students to other, more specialized, resources.

First-Year Experience & Transfer Student Experience

The First-Year Experience and Transition Seminars at the University of Mary support incoming students in their academic and social development. Students are engaged in activities and discussions that aim to increase the sense of community and connection to the institution and develop the necessary skills for a successful college transition. Students are also introduced to the University of Mary’s Mission, Benedictine Values, servant leadership, and the concept of a liberal arts education.

Student Support Services/TRIO

The Student Support Services/TRIO Program provides academic and personal support to first generation (neither parent has a bachelor’s degree), economically disadvantaged students, and/or students with disabilities. The program provides academic assistance with one-on-one tutoring, priority registration, mentoring, freshman seminar, study skills workshops and career exploration.

Students also receive assistance with financial literacy skills and securing appropriate financial resources. Qualifying TRIO students can apply for supplemental grant monies and receive book and merit grants. A variety of resources are available for students as they develop self-reliance, independence, and academic success.

Services for Students with Disabilities

The University of Mary is committed to providing all students with disabilities equal access to all its programs and services in full compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA).
