Admissions
Admission to the Nursing Academy at the University of Mary is a competitive process for first-time, first-year freshman. Scholars selected for entry to the Nursing Academy are directly admitted to the nursing program and will follow a year round program of study with degree completion in 2.6 years. The curriculum is the same as the Nursing, Traditional Major .
An individual with a disability is considered for admission based on his/her ability to meet the curriculum requirements. No otherwise qualified person shall be, solely by reason of a disability, excluded from participation in the program (American Disabilities Act of 1990). Students must verify that they meet the Physical & Mental Requirements to Provide Safe Patient Care for Students, Faculty, and Preceptors.
Acceptance Requirements:
- Completed application and acceptance to the University of Mary
- Completed Nursing Academy Application
- High school GPA of 3.5 or higher
- Preference given to candidates with qualifying standardized test scores
- Letter grades of C or higher for any nursing prerequisite coursework, (i.e. General Psychology, Oral Communication, etc.) taken as a dual credit in high school
Candidate selection will be based on application, interview, GPA, ACT/SAT/CLT and admission essay.
Requirements Necessary to Begin Nursing Practice Courses:
- All nursing prerequisite courses must be successfully completed with a grade of C or higher.
- Documentation of physical assessment, health history, current immunizations [Hepatitis B Series, Varicella, MMR, and Tdap], and Criminal background checks must be submitted through www.castlebranch.com.
- Negative two-step TB Mantoux test or quantiferon blood testing TB testing, annual flu vaccinations, and 12 panel drug screening. (Students are not able to appeal a positive result on a drug screen for non-prescription medications.)
- American Heart Association Basic Life Support for Health Care Professionals Certification© (two-year certification) and must be achieved prior to entry in nursing practice coursework and maintained through completion of the program.
Progression
Once admitted to the Nursing Division, students must earn a grade of C or higher in nursing courses and any remaining course requirements for the major.
Once beginning nursing practice coursework, students must successfully pass each semester of nursing courses prior to enrolling in subsequent nursing semesters.
Students may only repeat one NUR course. Repeated classes will also include those from which a student has withdrawn (W, WP, WF). Permission to continue will be granted or denied based on the circumstance related to the failure and space availability in the program of study.
Graduates of the nursing program are eligible to take the NCLEX RN exam to obtain licensure through the National Council of State Boards of Nursing.
The baccalaureate degree program in nursing at the University of Mary is accredited by the Commission on Collegiate Nursing Education (ccneaccreditation.org).
