SCI 209 - Life, Math, and the Pursuit of Science I

Our comprehension of the physical world around us is grounded in our experiences, observations and informed reason. Using relevant examples from the natural sciences, this course explores how different disciplines of inquiry- namely biology, chemistry, mathematics and physics- play a role in the exploration and discovery of the fundamental nature of the universe that surrounds us. This course explores how this mode of intellectual inquiry is linked to a common method that includes intuition, experimental testing, and the deduction of physical laws and principles that give order to our understanding. The first semester focuses on questions and ideas surrounding the structure of the cosmos, matter, and energy. These concepts are then applied to systems that are more complex in their organization with examples assembled from the biological sciences.
