Sacred Music Major

Degree Type: Bachelor of Music

The Bachelor of Science in Music with an Emphasis in Sacred Music degree prepares students with a liberal arts degree in music and a minor in Liturgy. Students in this major may serve as church musicians, continue in graduate studies in music or theology, or complement another undergraduate degree with a double major.

Department Mission

The Music Department endeavors to develop a community of learners where a challenging curriculum is integrated with practical experience and professional training so that graduates are prepared to excel in their chosen specializations.

Department Outcomes

Graduates of this department:

  • perform instrumentally and/or vocally with artistic competence and assess their own performance for purposes of continued development
  • conduct musical groups with attention to artistic concerns
  • know the field of music study; use its technical vocabulary and common approaches; describe current issues and significant artistic works
  • work effectively with others and demonstrate respect for them
  • articulate the values of this Benedictine institution and reflect on them in their work
  • contribute to their civic, cultural, and professional communities

The University of Mary Music Program is accredited as an Associate Member of the National Association of Schools of Music.

Major Requirements


Required Courses in Sacred Music


Students earn a minimum of 39 credits in MUS courses in the areas of Service Leadership, Music in Worship, Performance, Conducting, Arranging, Improvisation, and Composition

Three Semesters of Class or Applied Voice

Four Semesters of Class or Applied Piano


Choose from the below courses:

Two Semesters of Applied Organ


Choose from the below courses:

Two to Four Additional Semesters to Total Six Semesters in One Primary Area of Applied Music


  • Student can choose to complete the remaining hours in organ, voice, or piano.

Ensembles


Minimum of three semesters of MUS 212 /MUS 412  Concert Choir

Total of seven semesters of the same primary performance ensemble: MUS 211 /MUS 411 ; MUS 212 /MUS 412  (may substitute three semesters of MUS 214 /MUS 414  Cappella); MUS 220 /MUS 420  

Required Courses in Musicianship


Students earn 39 credits in MUS courses including the following required courses and 15 credits of MUS electives
