Civil Engineering Major

Engineering Student Outcomes

  1. an ability to identify, formulate, and solve complex engineering problems by applying principles of engineering, science, and mathematics
  2. an ability to apply engineering design to produce solutions that meet specified needs with consideration of public health, safety, and welfare, as well as global, cultural, social, environmental, and economic factors
  3. an ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences
  4. an ability to recognize ethical and professional responsibilities in engineering situations and make informed judgments, which must consider the impact of engineering solutions in global, economic, environmental, and societal contexts
  5. an ability to function effectively on a team whose members together provide leadership, create a collaborative and inclusive environment, establish goals, plan tasks, and meet objectives
  6. an ability to develop and conduct appropriate experimentation, analyze and interpret data, and use engineering judgment to draw conclusions
  7. an ability to acquire and apply new knowledge as needed, using appropriate learning strategies.

Civil Engineering Program Educational Objectives

Having been formed through Christian, Catholic and Benedictine values as whole persons for the whole of life, graduates of the University of Mary Civil Engineering program shall: 

  • Display moral and ethical integrity, social and environmental responsibility, professionalism, leadership, and a spirit of service.
  • Be able to effectively communicate, work on multidisciplinary teams, and manage time.
  • Be able to apply knowledge and skill to design in civil engineering or related fields.
  • Be able to adapt to changing technologies and engage in life-long learning.
  • Be prepared for post-graduate work which may include seeking an advanced degree, professional certification, or professional licensure.

Plans for the Future

The University of Mary is constructing a new Engineering building, including classrooms, laboratories and offices, which will be completed by Fall 2020. Additionally, ABET accreditation will be sought for the Bachelor’s Degree program in Civil Engineering during the 2020-2021 cycle. Civil Engineering degrees awarded before accreditation will be retroactively accredited.

Program Requirements


Need a grade of “C-” or better for all courses required of the major, as well as any pre-requisite courses for the major requirements.

Students must also achieve a GPA of 2.5 or higher for all courses required of the major.

Required Courses:


Technical Electives: Need Two


A technical elective is either one of the specified technical electives for the major or, with instructor and adviser permission, students may choose courses from other engineering majors of 300 level or above to satisfy their technical elective course requirements.


Total: 139 Semester Credits


Program length: 4 academic years / 128 weeks
